I-94 / 421 Overpass
BY JESSICA O’BRIEN – Michigan City News Dispatch – Apr 15, 2014
The final design for the I-94/U.S. Highway 421 overpass has been agreed upon by members of the Michigan City Redevelopment Commission.
A design proposal, presented by Hesham Khalil and Jeff Oltmanns of Global Engineering during Monday’s meeting of the commission, was unanimously approved by the commissioners and will be forwarded to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) on May 1.
Khalil also provided an update on the overpass, saying that a contract agreement for this project between INDOT and the city has been approved by the Board of Public Works and Safety. He is hopeful that it will be approved by the mayor’s office and INDOT later this week.
This project includes the replacement of the bridge deck and concrete walls of the overpass, as well as the installation of lighting, railing, flag poles and a sign reading “Michigan City.” When complete, it will resemble highway overpasses in Valparaiso and Porter.
The lettering of the words “Michigan City” will be silver with a white blacklight.
