After months of meetings, workshops and revisions, the Michigan City Redevelopment Commission on Monday approved funding for the Washington Park makeover at an amount not to exceed $3.49 million.
Based on a recommendation from Global Engineering, the contract is expected to be awarded to Gariup Construction, which came in at the lowest bid and included the alternatives recommended by the engineering firm.
These include the demolition of a concrete/WPA style wall, a park entrance sign, a stainless steel sailboat decoration on the building and a freestanding retractable awning for the north side of the new J.C. Stage. Alternatives eliminated from the plan were fire pits and the paving of a gravel lot.
Also during Monday’s meeting, the commission approved a request from Shannon Eason, interim co-superintendent of the Michigan City Parks and Recreation Department, for $60,000 to help fund the construction of a kayak launch at Hansen Park.
Primarily funded through a Lake Michigan Coastal grant, the project total came in over budget, Eason said, explaining the need to approach the Redevelopment Commission for the funds.
